We Demand Justice Betty Duren Scott Born 10.10.44 Killed 9.20.75 by Curtis Engberson, California Highway Patrol .....The Real Reason For Her Death Will Not Be Given, Unless The Police Come Out With A Statement That Says: Cause Of Death: Sick Society Cause Of Death: A Culture In Which The Reason You Were Killed Is Almost As Natural As If You Had Died of Old Age.... Cause Of Death Ignorance, Racism, Hatred, Insanity, Mistrust, Emotional Disorder, Perversion, Greed, Fear, Toil, Slavery, Lack Of Communication, - Culture Of Science. But The "Police" Won't Issue Any Statement Like That. Only The People Can Issue A Statement That Says: Cause Of Death: Murder--No Doubt About It!!! Betty Duren Scott was a community activist who, with her older brother B. Kwaku Duren, and others, founded an alternate elementary school in Long Beach, CA in 1972, the Intercommunal Youth Institute (IYI). The first IYI was started by the Black Panther Party in 1971, in Oakland, CA, to give black children a quality education. In 1975, Scott was fatally shot by a California Highway Patrol officer during a routine traffic stop. Following Scott’s death, the IYI dissolved. In the wake of her death, Duren helped found the Coalition Against Police Abuse (CAPA). Betty Duren Scott fue una activista comunitaria quien, junto con su hermano mayor B. Kwaku Duren y otros, fundaron el Instituto Intercomunitario de la Juventud (IYI), una escuela primaria alterna en Long Beach, CA en 1972. La primera IYI fue establecida por el partido Pantera Negra en 1971, en Oakland, CA, para brindar educación de calidad a los niños negros. A Scott le disparo de muerte un oficial de la patrulla de caminos de California durante una parada de tráfico rutinaria. La IYI fue disuelta después de la muerte de Scott. A raíz de su muerte Duren ayudo a fundar la Coalición en contra del Abuso Policial (CAPA).
