Hidden Apartheid Dalit Women Amta, 30, of Randevi village, under the jurisdiction of the Nakud Police Station, had her face blackened and her bottom thrashed in front of the Panchyat for naming two of her Jat neighbours in a case of theft at her house (Hindustan Times, Sept. 18, 1997) Bihar: 01 Dec., 1996-Laxmanpur-Bathe Massacre: Five teenage girls were raped and mutilated in an attempt by land lords to reassert authority over increasingly vocal Dalits. All five girls were shot in the vagina and their breast were cut off. Tamilnadu: 21 Feb., 1975: Poonkothai, 20, and her mother, 48, of Vannarapettai, were taken to the police station for questioning by police in search of her brother, a suspected murderer. At the station, Poonkothai witnessed the rape of her mother by police who later brought her home and set her on fire. Police registered the case as a suicide. District Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Tejdeep told UNI over phone that 13 upper caste people were arrested in this connection. The Dalit woman, Gangrantnamma, had urged with upper caste women about her right to use the borewell. This led to a clash between two castes and the Dalits were told that they would no longer be allowed to draw water from the bore well. Later, the upper catse people went on the rampage, damaging houses of Dalits and beating up the womenfolk. They dragged Gangaratnamma out of her house and disrobed her.
