Minnesota Break the Bonds Campaign (MN BBC) was formed in response to the 2005 Palestinian civil society call for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions. MN BBC chose to target the millions of dollars in Israel bonds held by the Minnesota State Board of Investments largely because they saw such a campaign as an opportunity to educate a broad statewide audience about the realities of Israel and Palestine. To this end, members of MN BBC traveled the state presenting educational events, film series, and discussion sessions. Along with its educational component, members of MN BBC have been meeting with state senators and representatives to encourage them to sponsor a bill to divest from Israel bonds. The group is also appealing to the State Board of Investments. Although these efforts have not yet met with success, they are ongoing. While Minnesota remains invested in Israel bonds, the campaign has succeeded in expanding its membership and raising awareness around the state.
