Genocide Justice We Are Not The Enemy Incite! Women of Color Against Violence P.O. Box 6861 Minneapolis, MN 55406 Meena, R.A.W.A. Poster by Favianna Rodriguez

Acquisition Number: 2001-155

"Meena (1956-1987) was born in 1956 in Kabul. She left school to devote herself as a social activist to organizing and educating women. In pursuit of her cause for gaining the right of freedom of expression and conducting political activities, Meena laid the foundation of RAWA in 1977. She started a campaign against the Russian forces and their puppet regime in 1979 and organized numerous processions and meetings in schools, colleges and Kabul University to mobilize public opinion. She was assassinated by agents of KHAD (Afghanistan branch of KGB) and their fundamentalist accomplices in Quetta, Pakistan, on February 4,1987. In opposition to the United States' call for war after 9-11, I developed this poster in collaboration with INCITE, Women of Color Against Violence. It was developed as one of two anti-war posters that were reproduced by the thousands and distributed to major national cities, including Chicago, Los Angeles & Minneapolis. The poster became a national icon against the war and was well received by women of color and anti-war groups across the country." (Source:
