Translation: Alto a la Tubería. El petróleo de arenas bituminosas, una mezcla de arena, arcilla, agua y alquitrán, es la forma de petróleo más sucia y más destructiva para el clima en el mundo. Cuando se derrama, es casi imposible de limpiar. El Sistema de Oleoducto Keystone es un oleoducto Canadiense-Americano que transporta petróleo de arenas bituminosas de Alberta, Canadá a lugares en Illinois, Oklahoma y Texas. El petróleo derivado de las arenas bituminosas históricamente ha sido considerado una fuente no convencional y costosa de petróleo, pero ahora está siendo purificado y utilizado por las compañías petroleras. El oleoducto ha sido criticado por desestimar esfuerzos para frenar el cambio climático mediante la inversión en el uso de combustibles fósiles. Tar sands oil, a mixture of sand, clay, water, and tar, is the dirtiest and most climate-destructive form of oil in the world. When it spills, it is almost impossible to clean up. The Keystone Pipeline System is a Canadian-U.S. pipeline to transport oil from tar sands in Alberta, Canada to sites in Illinois, Oklahoma, and Texas. Oil derived from tar sands has historically been considered an unconventional and expensive source of petroleum but is now being refined and used by oil companies. The pipeline has been criticized for undermining efforts to slow climate change by investing in the use of fossil fuels. Commissioned in 2010, the pipeline has completed three of four phases included in the project proposal. The fourth phase is another pipeline, known as Keystone XL, which would have the same origin and destination as Keystone but would take a more direct route and carry an increased supply of oil. Keystone XL was met with strong opposition by environmentalists and was ultimately voted down by Obama’s administration after six years of review.
